Quiet move puzzles

No check, no capture, and still winning. Quiet moves are the hardest tactics to find because we look at forcing moves first.

Some set up an unstoppable threat. Others are zugzwang: the opponent is fine as long as they do not have to move, and every move they have makes things worse.

How to spot it

• When no forcing move works, ask what you would play if it were your move twice.
• Look for a move that creates two threats at once.
• In endgames, a waiting move can be the whole puzzle.
