Praggnanandhaa Wins the 2026 Grand Chess Tour With a Comeback
R Praggnanandhaa came back from 3-9 down against Fabiano Caruana to win the Grand Chess Tour Finals 15-13 in St. Louis - plus every 2026 GCT winner.
India's R Praggnanandhaa won the 2026 Grand Chess Tour, the most prestigious elite circuit in chess, with one of the great comebacks of the year. In the final in St. Louis, he trailed Fabiano Caruana 3–9 going into the last day - and won the match 15–13.
The final
The GCT Finals were played at the Saint Louis Chess Club from 22 to 27 August, with the tour's top four players: Praggnanandhaa, Caruana, Wesley So and Vincent Keymer. Each match mixed two classical games, two rapid games and four blitz games, with longer games worth more points.
Caruana took control early, winning the first classical game and building a six-point lead. On the final day, Praggnanandhaa won both rapid games to turn the match around and lead 11–9. In the last blitz game he reached a winning position but took a perpetual-check draw instead, which was enough to clinch the title.
He collected $200,000; Caruana took $125,000 for second.
- Semifinals: Praggnanandhaa beat Keymer; Caruana beat So after two drawn classical games and a bonus blitz game.
- Third place: So beat Keymer, sweeping all four blitz games.

Praggnanandhaa's year
The tour title caps the best year of Praggnanandhaa's career. He also won Norway Chess in June, beating Vincent Keymer in the final round to finish ahead of Wesley So, and the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz in August. In September he played top board for India at the Olympiad, winning team silver and individual bronze.
His sister Vaishali Rameshbabu won the Women's Candidates in April, so the family now holds two of the biggest titles of 2026.
